Lengthy journeys across the ocean left many sailors with a lot of free time. Many passed their time with handicrafts and constructed intricate replicas of the places they visited, they carved loved ones' faces into scraps for mementos and they developed a large system of knots for practical and decorative purposes. This course will explore the arts of the sailor and use them as point of departure for individual projects. Students will be introduced to the history and techniques of scrimshaw, tramp art, canvas work, assemblage, rope making, and knotting.
